PT 728 Welcomes
The USS New York
November 2nd, 2009
New York Harbor
PT 728 was honored to be part of the flotilla that was on hand to greet the USS New York when she entered New
York Harbor for the first time. The
New York will be commissioned at Pier 88 on Saturday November 7th, 2009.

The
USS New York bears a special significance to all New Yorkers as she carries 7.5 tons of Steel that was salvaged
from the World Trade Center in her Bow Section.

PT 728 had a full compliment of guests and crew members when she departed the North Cove Marina in Lower
Manhattan at 0630 that morning.  We met the
New York  at 0730 in Gravesend Bay at the 22 Buoy just off of Bay
Ridge, Brooklyn. From that point we formed up  behind Sandy Hook Pilot Boat 1 and directly in front of the
New
York
as she cleared the Verrazano Bridge. Having that ship at our stern is a sight that I will never forget.

We proceeded North past the Statue of Liberty  to the World Trade Center Site where the flotilla came to "All Stop".
Each Vessel lowered their ensigns to half Staff and observed a moment of silence as the
USS New York fired a 21 gun
salute in honor of the victims of 9/11.

All vessels then proceeded North past the
USS Intrepid to 137th Street where we came about and returned with the
USS New York now as the lead vessel.  Upon her return to the USS Intrepid, she was gently set into pier 88.

This was a day that the crew and our guests will never forget.
